The Pittsburgh Music Ecosystem Study:

Activating A Community Response

An Ambitious Proposal to Advance Pittsburgh’s Music Ecosystem

The release of the Pittsburgh Music Ecosystem Study is an ambitious starting point for enhancing Pittsburgh’s local music scene and music industry.

The study is the outcome of an intensive 10-month process, including input from more than 1,800 musicians, civic leaders and others. It reveals strengths and weaknesses within Pittsburgh’s interconnected music ecosystem, as well as promising opportunities for progress.

Music Ecosystem—

A complex network or interconnected system of creative and business professionals providing music-related outputs within a city or region.

Five essential areas are targeted for long-term focus and development. Descriptions, case studies and a series of in-depth recommendations are provided to advance understanding and spur action in each:

  • Leadership Development
  • Career Development
  • Regulatory Reform
  • Industry Development
  • Audience Development

The organizations that spearheaded the study—91.3 WYEP, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and the City of Pittsburgh—encourage the music community, civic leaders and others to make the most of its findings and move forward with the recommendations they believe will yield positive results and feed their ecosystem. There are no quick fixes, the challenges are complex, but ongoing focus on the study’s findings can yield dramatic progress. #PGHMusicUnites
